The Power of a Solo Vacation

June 04, 20242 min read

Hey friend!

After I returned from a solo vacation, I had a doctor's appointment. When I told my doctor she said, “You mean you go on a vacation without your husband?”

          And I excitedly replied, “Yes!”

If you have been around awhile, you know this is something I do at least once a year. It’s so good for my soul. I love my husband, but when it comes to relaxing vacations, we have different ideas of what that entails. We do go on vacation together, but they serve a different purpose and they look very different than my solo vacation.

So, what does a solo vacation look like? Well, my friend, it looks like anything you want it to look like.

For this trip, to my alma mater, Taylor University, I rented a cozy Airbnb. It had a room with a bed and not much else, a bathroom, and a common space with a coffee maker, a small table, and a microwave. There was no television or any frills, but it was cheap and served its purpose.

The first day, I got up early as I had an event to attend at Taylor. The last two days, I slept in and wasn’t in a rush to start my day. I took long strolls around the campus and snapped a lot of pictures of nature. I spent one day working on projects for book writing/publishing clients, writing my fiction book, and catching up on my business “to-do” list. I know, I know, it doesn’t sound like much of a vacation, but I actually love the work.

I got Chic-fila for dinner, attended a Chris Tomlin concert with strangers (who are now friends), and got a grasshopper sundae from Ivanhoe’s. It's my favorite!

I sipped on coffee in the morning, read a book I found on the shelf at the Airbnb, Common Prayers, not to be confused with my book Uncommon Prayers (you can get here, if interested), and just took time to be still and not be on anyone’s schedule.

I came back from this trip renewed, focused, and rejuvenated.

Part of Giving Your Best Life is slowing down and taking time to give to yourself. One way we can do that is to take a solo vacation. So…my question, friend, is, would you take a solo vacation? If not, why? And if yes, where would you go? And when?

I can’t wait to hear your answer!
